A song written after a hospice patient left me with a few months of conversations to ponder and a refrain I couldn't shake

Lyrics

Doot Doodle Ooo
I used to brag that I wasn't afraid of dying.
Well either I was wrong, or I was lying,
trying to clear my head.
Because living hard had led me to believe
that I'd be likely quickly dead; But
instead, here I am scared of dying slow,
just stuck here in this bed, Oh:
I'm anxious about the time between
my next and last regret.
I sure as hell am so ready to go;
but I'm not quite ready yet.
It turns out that I'm afraid to die,
as I take a breath,
I'm burning out and learning that
I'm not afraid of death.

Doot Doodle-ooo.
Doot doodle oot doot.
Doot doooo, doodle ooo,
do you…

…remember when you and I first met?
Do you remember then that I had made a bet?
Well I bet you that I still could bounce and that I'd be coming back.
You just shrugged and said "who knows, but let's get today on track."

Doot doodle-ooo...

"Do you ever think about what's next?"
Is the question you asked me a while ago.
Well, I do and I think it's all a guess,
But it feels a lot like a candle getting low.
And sometimes my jaw locks up,
and I can't talk and so… I sing:

Doot doodle-ooo...

I tip my hat to the great unknown,
With a cough and a laugh,
lying here alone.
If death is the punchline,
I'll steal the show—
One last joke before I go….

Doot doodle-ooo....
Toodleooo.

I used to brag that I wasn't afraid of dying.
Well either I was wrong, or I was lying,
trying to clear my head.
Because living hard had led me to believe
that I'd be likely quickly dead;
But instead, here I am scared of dying slow,
just stuck here in this bed, Oh:
I'm anxious about the time between
my next and last regret.
I sure as hell am so ready to go;
but I'm not quite ready yet.
It turns out that I'm afraid to die,
as I take a breath,
I'm burning out and learning that I'm not afraid of…
burning out and learning that I'm not afraid of…
burning out and learning that I'm not afraid of…
burning out and learning that I'm not afraid of…

(death.)
